Rancho Bohemia

Grower Code: NL

I have lived at Rancho Bohemia since 2000, when it was located in rural Brazos County, Texas. In 2012, the Rancho and I relocated to Boise, Idaho. I was raised on the Gulf Coast of Louisiana and Texas by a plant loving father, and inspired by my Czech grandmother (Moravian, not Bohemian, as family legend had it –too late, I’d already landed on the name!) who had a vast garden that she worked by hand into her 80s.

Although I began a formal horticultural education at Texas A&M University, my true “on the ground” training took place after I moved to Boise. I was fortunate to be an intern at Earthly Delights Farm, with SRSC co-founder Casey O'Leary; to participate in the Canyon County Master Gardener program led by Ariel Agenbroad; and to work for 9 years at the Idaho Botanical Garden. I served as the first Nursery and Greenhouse Coordinator at the Idaho Botanical Garden and established its greenhouse propagation program.

I steward a couple of Texas natives, winecups (Callirhoe involucrata) and smooth rose mallow (Hibiscus laevis), which perform beautifully in southwest Idaho and are well-adapted in many parts of North America.
