Strawflowers are a versatile plant that is used fresh or dried in bouquets. Pollinators love them, and we do, too! Their tiered petal layers remind us of the awe-inspiring Pagoda architecture found in East and Southeast Asia. These sturdy flowers can also be used in long-lasting garlands. Follow our D-I-Y steps to make your own for hanging as decoration in your house, at a party, or outside. The possibilities are endless!

Step-by-Step Guide to Making Strawflower Garlands
Items you'll need: seeds, pruners/scissors, sewing needle, sewing thimble, thread.
- Plant our Strawflower Mix seed indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost, or direct seed after frost. These seeds require light to germinate, so push them into the soil surface and keep them well-watered for germination.
- Care for your plants in spring and summer by giving them a deep watering 2-3x per week.
- Harvest your flowers! You can enjoy them in a vase of water for a week or two before making the garland.
- Use scissors or pruners to remove the flowers from the stems, cutting as close as possible to the flower.
- Double up your thread and cut it as long as you want it.
- Thread your needle and tie a knot.
- Using your thimble on your thumb or preferred finger, push the needle through the middle of the flower. It's easiest to do this on the top of the flower, not on the bottom side where the stem is in the middle.
- Repeat step 7 until you have the desired number of flowers on your thread.
- Space your flowers evenly on the thread, or unevenly if that's your jam!
- Hang your garland and celebrate your achievement! You made a garland!
