Bean, Lofthouse Landrace Tepary

  • Sold out

Description

Phaseolus acutifolius

Webstore Exclusive.

Originating in the deserts of Mexico and Southwestern United States, tepary beans are known for being drought tolerant and heat resistant. Cultivated tepary beans have been found in Tehuacan Valley in Mexico dating back 7,000 years! This landrace variety comes from Joseph Lofthouse in Utah. Starting with several varieties, Joseph has been selecting the best plants to save for seed.

Notes about variety from Joseph Lofthouse:

"Short season, landrace tepary beans. I have selected for pods that do not shatter in the field, but that shatter easily after harvest. To harvest I recommend pulling the plant whole and hitting it against the inside of a garbage can. Avoid picking individual pods due to shattering. I also harvest by cutting the vine off just above ground level, finish drying on a tarp, and then beating or stomping the vines to release the seed. Selected by Joseph Lofthouse."

Seeds grown by Joseph Lofthouse in Paradise, Utah.

50 seeds.

Directions: Direct seed after danger of frost has passed. Harvest dry beans in the fall.
