Tomato, Big Hill

  • $5.00

Description

Solanum lycopersicum

An amateur plant breeder's dream tomato!

DETERMINATE. Introduced by Joseph Lofthouse who selected this variety to be early maturing, delicious, and highly promiscuous! The fruits are extra large & bicolored with intermixing yellows & reds. Flowers have a sturdy and protruding stigma for easy cross pollination! Go wild!

Tomatoes are native to northwestern South America and by at least 500 BC they had been domesticated and were being cultivated as far north as modern-day Mexico, enjoyed by Aztec and other civilizations. They spread to Europe and the Caribbean through the Spanish colonizers, where they became staple parts of the food culture in many European countries as well. One of Big Hill's parents was Jagodka, a Russian cherry tomato.

This variety was pledged as "HX-9" to the Open Source Seed Initiative (OSSI) by Joseph Lofthouse.

Seeds grown by Sonshine Acres in Emmett, Idaho.

30 seeds.

Directions: Start indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost and transplant out after. Bury past first set of leaves, add eggshells to soil for calcium, and provide support.
