Tomato, Black Cherry

  • $4.00

Description

Solanum lycopersicum

Sumptuous cherry tomato with sultry, dusky purple flesh.

Indeterminate heirloom that produces ample large (1.5 in), dusky purple cherries prized for their complex, juicy, smoky-sweet flavor. A farm favorite! Vines are large, so plant and space accordingly. Takes awhile to come on, but it's well worth the wait!

Tomatoes are native to northwestern South America and by at least 500 BC they had been domesticated and were being cultivated as far north as modern-day Mexico, enjoyed by Aztec and other civilizations. They spread to Europe and the Caribbean through the Spanish colonizers, where they became staple parts of the food culture in many European countries as well. Their circuitous journey has brought them back to the United States, where Florida seedsman Vince Sapp purportedly noticed this off-type in his field and proliferated it from there.
