Milkweed, Narrowleaf

  • Sold out

Description

Asclepias fascicularis

A.k.a. Mexican Whorled Milkweed; a Great Basin native monarch butterfly attractor.

Milkweeds are the sole food source for monarch butterfly caterpillars. Narrowleaf milkweed is native to the western part of the Great Basin. Dainty plants with big showy blooms and narrow leaves also make beautiful ornamentals. 24" tall.

50 seeds.

Seeds grown by Grand Prismatic Seed in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Directions: Give Narrowleaf Milkweed a 1-to-2-month period of exposure to cold, moist conditions. You can direct seed in late fall, to allow for natural cold stratification over the winter, or do this using your refrigerator. To start indoors, remove seeds from the packet and wrap in a moist (but not sopping wet) coffee filter or paper towel, place in a plastic sandwich bag, then place in a clean glass jar. Store the jar with seeds in the refrigerator for 1 or 2 months. If you want to broadcast the seed (rather than sowing individually), mix the seeds with moist sand in a plastic bag. Put the bag in a clean jar and the place in the refrigerator for 1 or 2 months. Then plant the cold-stratified seed about 1/4-inch deep. Transplant container-grown plants outside after danger of frost when plants are large enough to handle easily.
