Amaranth, Aztec Mix

  • $4.00

Description

Amaranthus spp.

Stunning plants yield nutritious seeds and leaves. Aztec superfood!

Amaranth was a staple grain of the Aztec people in Mexico. It also played a large role in Aztec festivals and ceremonies, and was thus outlawed by the Spanish colonizers. The importance of this plant was not forgotten, and lucky for us, many Aztec people rebelled by continuing to grow and save the seed.

The small, nutritious seeds can be threshed by hand and, unlike many other grains, don't need to be hulled to eat! This mix includes all of our co-op grown Amaranth varieties, which range in color from deep maroon to apricot orange, all with edible, spinach-flavored leaves (some golden, some green, some deep red), and nutritious seeds. Will self-sow, bringing stunning beauty and food year after year! 3-10' tall!

250 seeds.

Directions: Direct seed after last frost or start indoors early. Thin to 12" for bigger seed heads.
