Description
Solanum lycopersicum
18th century European heirloom.
This pear-shaped tomato is just the right size for snacking or adding to a fresh garden salad. They're sturdy enough to resist cracking, and big enough to not take forever to fill a pint when you're picking them, unlike some of the smaller cherry type tomatoes. Plant them with yellow pear tomatoes for beautiful, multi-colored market garden baskets!
Grower Sonshine Acres won 4th place with this crop at the Western Idaho Fair in 2023!
Tomatoes are native to northwestern South America and by at least 500 BC they had been domesticated and were being cultivated as far north as modern-day Mexico, enjoyed by Aztec and other civilizations. They spread to Europe and the Caribbean via the Spanish colonizers, where they became staple parts of the food culture in many European countries as well.
