Tomato, Amish Paste

  • $4.79

Description

Solanum lycopersicum

Beloved North American heirloom canning tomato. Large, meaty fruits with less juice.

For those who want lots of meaty fruit to can or turn into sauces— dense fruits with less juice and seeds than most. Most fruits are large, egg-shaped but you may find a few surprise oxhearts, too! Rampantly indeterminate—reign her in! Open-pollinated.

Tomatoes are native to northwestern South America and by at least 500 BC they had been domesticated and were being cultivated as far north as modern-day Mexico, enjoyed by Aztec and other civilizations. They spread to Europe and the Caribbean through the Spanish colonizers, where they became staple parts of the food culture in many European countries. So while this variety is an Amish heirloom, its roots are in Mesoamerica and it took a circuitous journey to arrive in Amish country.
