Tomato, Boxcar Willie

  • $4.00

Description

Solanum lycopersicum

Rare heirloom tomato grown by country music legend and radio DJ Boxcar Willie!

Shared with us by Shawn Kimmel, whose family lived in Boxcar Willie's old Boise house, and was reportedly gifted these slicers from The World's Favorite Hobo himself. The REAL 'Celebrity' tomato? We think so! Uniform variety holds up well after picking, pleasant tomato flavor. Indeterminate. Open-pollinated.

Tomatoes are native to northwestern South America and by at least 500 BC they had been domesticated and were being cultivated as far north as modern-day Mexico, enjoyed by Aztec and other civilizations. They spread to Europe and the Caribbean through the Spanish colonizers, where they became staple parts of the food culture in many European countries as well. Their circuitous journey has brought them back to the United States, right back to Idaho and the World's Favorite Hobo!
