Description

Solanum lycopersicum

Extremely compact, early-ripening tomato for cold mountain gardens.

Bred by the University of Idaho in the 1960s. This variety is extremely handsome and compact, bearing loads of early 2" fruits on a squatty plant. Shares the beautiful leaf texture of Payette--highly ornamental. Not the best flavor, but beats the storeboughts, and works great in pots! One of the most reliable producers for high mountain gardeners. Determinate. Open-pollinated.

Tomatoes are native to northwestern South America and by at least 500 BC they had been domesticated and were being cultivated as far north as modern-day Mexico, enjoyed by Aztec and other civilizations. They spread to Europe and the Caribbean through the Spanish colonizers, where they became staple parts of the food culture in many European countries as well.
