Description
Cucurbita pepo
This zucchini is no Houdini in the garden...
With Goldini II, your days of finding baseball-bat-sized zucchinis are long behind you. These fruits are easy to see amongst the foliage, making them easy to harvest! An improved line from plant breeder Carol Deppe, Goldini II is early maturing and versatile. Carol bred this variety to maintain its flavor through drying and storing. Lucky for us, it's also a tasty snack when enjoyed fresh or cooked in the summer.
We celebrate the diversity of plants with Carol! She shares this about Goldini: "Leaves may be solid green, speckled, silver, roundish, dissected, or sharp-pointed. Some young plants have goldish leaves; others don’t. Some pedicels (fruit stems) are yellow; most are green. Let genetic heterogeneity live!"
Squashes are a part of the vast agricultural and culinary legacy of this continent, with indigenous seedkeepers in modern-day Mexico and Central America cultivating some types at least 10,000 years ago. Along with their sisters corn and beans, they spread throughout the western hemisphere through the loving care of Native Americans and by the time European colonizers arrived on the continent, many varieties of squash were being grown by farmers from the southwest to the northeast. We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to the original stewards of the nutrient-packed, long-keeping, healthy-seed-spawning miracle that is a squash, along with its tender zucchini cousins!
OSSI royalties are shared with Carol Deppe for this variety.
