Description
Allium sativum
This large bulbed softneck has won multiple taste test awards, including top honors at the Rodale Kitchens Taste test! Flavor! KAPOW!
Inchelium Red has a mild heat with a slight lingering tingle on the tongue, making it a lovely baking or raw garlic. Bulbs can be over 3 inches in diameter, producing 4-5 layers of cloves with a total of 8-20 cloves in a head. Outer layers produce large, easy-to-peel cloves, which decrease in size towards the center of the head.
Inchelium Red braids are good for hanging in kitchens, a traditional and beautiful way to store and display your garlic. Large bulbs, mild flavor, and long shelf life make this one of the world's most popular soft neck varieties.
This variety averages 8-20 cloves per bulb and 5-10 bulbs per pound.
This variety was discovered on the Colville Reservation in Washington. Learn more about the Tribes' revitalization coalition here.
Storage instructions: Keep your garlic bulbs in a paper bag in a cool, dark, dry place until you are ready to plant it. The ideal storage temperature is 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit. Air needs to circulate freely around the bag. Do not store garlic in the refrigerator.
Sowing instructions: Garlic is best sown in the fall after the first frost of the season. Wait until just before planting to separate the bulbs into cloves. Plant the clove with the pointed end facing up. We recommend mulching your garlic bed with a light layer of leaves or straw to help with weed suppression and overwintering.
